The CMEC was formed around 1870 by a handful of African American priests and ministers who wished for their own congregation in Methodism.

This church maintains its administrations much like a democracy, with bishops being voted in for terms of authority.

As of 2008, more than 3,700 congregations have been recognized as CMEC and almost 1 million members belong to the denomination.
