Associating itself with the teachings of Martin Luther from 16th century Germany, this church is one of the largest branches of Western Christianity and resulted in the Protestant Reformation. The earliest Lutheran services can be traced back to Copenhagen in 1520, when believers secretly met under the Catholic rule of Frederick I.

This church is characterized by its beliefs on the Bible being the complete and direct word of God, and the ultimate authority for direction, purpose, and living. The Lutheran Church in America believes that teaching the Word of God to believers produces faith, obedience, clarity, and a life full of meaning and value for Christians.

The Lutheran Church places a good deal of importance and emphasis on education and knowledge, with nearly all of its congregations maintaining Sunday School and even some holding prepatory K-12 and post-secondary institutions. Also, pastors in the Lutheran Church nearly always have a substantial education in theology and are heavily trained in canoncical Christian scriptures using their original languages.
