The Russian Orthodox Church was founded in 1448 by both Andrew the Apostle and Vladimir the Great in Russia, and was officially recognized as a patriarchate in 1589.
The language of the church is Slavonic and although many people believe the church membership to be isolated strongly in Russia, much of its nearly 1 billion members are located in other parts of the world (with a concentration of roughly 25 million members in Russia).
