The Wesleyan Church was formed in 1843 in New York as a result of a separation from the Methodist Episcopal Church due to opposing viewpoints concerning slavery.

The church is of Protestant classification with Holiness orientation and associates itself with the Christian Holiness Partnership as well as the National Association of Evangelicals.

The total membership is believed to be almost half a million strong worldwide, with almost 200,000 in North America alone coming from more than 5,000 congregations.

Important mergers over this churches history include the Wesleyan Methodist Connection and the Alliance of Reformed Baptists of Canada.
