Dental schools offer training in both a 4-year college and a technical or vocational environment. While most Dentist's require at least 8 years of formal education after high school; dental assistant schools and dental hygienist schools can offer degrees in as little as 18 months.

Currently, there are 56 dental schools that are certified and accredited from the American Dental Association, or ADA. Dental hygienists and dental assistants, however, will be able to receive training from almost any institution that offers the degree program.

Dental school prerequisites will vary by the school, but generally speaking those students wishing to become Dentists should have 3 to 4 years of completed undergraduate coursework before moving on to a graduate degree dental program. Dental hygiene and dental assisting schools usually only require a high school diploma or equivalent.
