Firefighters usually complete coursework at community colleges and technical schools, often with an associate’s degree in Fire Science. However, many students continue receiving formal education for several months when starting their careers at a fire department.

Coursework for this degree includes both practical and theoretical instruction. Students will learn how to operate firefighting and rescue equipment, and will also complete necessary training in first aid and health safety.

Learning about hazardous materials and their effects on fire is also part of many firefighting schools curriculum.

While people often think that fire fighters only have one career path, many fire fighters go on to become Fire Department Chiefs, Fire Captains, fire safety instructors for youth, and fire investigators for insurance companies. Some firefighters even go on to serve in public offices.
