Marine transportation and diving schools train students to operate, repair, and provide maintenance for commercial watercraft. The coursework will usually include significant amounts of practical training in oceanography, ship instrumentation, first aid, firefighting, and mechanical principles.

Additionally, there will be on-the-job training and certification required of merchant mariners after graduation. The US Coast Guard designates the amount of training that entry-level mariners receive.

Currently, they require that mariners must posses a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) and a Transportation Identification Credential (TWIC). Both of these certifications typically take a few weeks to complete.

Scuba diving certification typically takes around 2-3 months for most applicants and trains students in principles of air pressure, instrumentation, and sometimes even underwater explosives.
