College Officials' Perspective

American School Search has been contacted by a representative of Shepherd University who expressed a different perspective of their campus safety. Our goal is to provide information that is both unbiased and detailed, especially so in regards to such a sensitive topic as campus safety.

Therefore, we have provided Shepherd University with an opportunity to present their point of view below:

From: K. Alan Perdue, General Counsel

Message: The rating which your website issues to Shepherd University relating to crime statistics is a stunning failure on your part to provide valid analytics to potential students.

The nation has been engaged in an intense examination of the problem of sexual assaults on college campuses for years. The US Dept of Education believes that up to 25% of all female college students suffer some form of sexual assault, nationwide.

So when a University like Shepherd succeeds in encouraging the assault victims to come forward with some information to the University Police Department, rather than concealing the assaults, your rating system punishes us, when it should be rewarding us. You should be issuing an "F" to the many much larger schools which are reporting almost no assaults, because we know that in reality the assaults are happening on virtually all campuses, virtually everywhere.
