Safety Evaluation

College Officials' Perspective

American School Search has been contacted by a representative of University of Redlands who expressed a different perspective of their campus safety. Our goal is to provide information that is both unbiased and detailed, especially so in regards to such a sensitive topic as campus safety.

Therefore, we have provided University of Redlands with an opportunity to present their point of view below:

From: Brent G. T. Geraty, Esq., General Counsel

Message: You have ranked the U of R as the 61st "most dangerous" college in the country. Just a quick glance at your list of "dangerous" schools is laughable. Have you ever been to Williamstown, Massachusetts, or Marquette, Michigan (or Redlands, California)?!

You invite people to "learn more about methodology used to determine the most dangerous colleges in the USA," but then you reveal nothing about your methodology. You say only that you use both on-campus and off-campus crime statistics and that your projection "is based on a unique and comprehensive formula that takes into account several different factors." Does your formula take into account, for example, that if a student takes a campus golf cart and goes on a joy ride and leaves the cart on the other side of campus that it is reported as a "motor vehicle theft"?

On the pages where you invite college and university officials to make contact with you, you state: "Our safety formulas will not be disclosed." You do not see a problem with taking crime statistics and putting them through a secret, undisclosed, magical formula? If you are not willing to reveal your sources and your methodology, your numbers cannot be trusted.

Your statements about our University — just like your virtually identical statements about all colleges and universities - uses words like "presumably very dangerous" and "alleged problems." You probably think that using those words shields you from accusations of defamation. But their use does not shield you. Defamatory statements include those statements where there are implied facts. And your statements about your use of crime statistics, and formulas, and methodology, imply that you have facts that back up your statements. But you do not have these facts and that makes your untrue statements defamatory.

You guarantee that you are treating colleges "equally." It may or may not be equal, but it certainly is not fair, accurate, or in any way helpful to people who wish to identify safe/unsafe environments. I will expect you to remove the University of Redlands from your list of "most dangerous" colleges — you should remove the whole list since it is a farce — immediately. We are not trying to hide anything. We report accurate statistics based on Clery definitions. That does not make us dangerous — it makes us trustworthy.
