College Officials' Perspective

American School Search has been contacted by a representative of West Texas A & M University who expressed a different perspective of their campus safety. Our goal is to provide information that is both unbiased and detailed, especially so in regards to such a sensitive topic as campus safety.

Therefore, we have provided West Texas A & M University with an opportunity to present their point of view below:

From: Meri Lyn Odell, Victim Assistance Coordinator

Message: WTAMU is a 4 year residential university unlike most of those listed in comparison and should have a greater number of criminal offenses reported for no other reason than a large group of 18-24 y/o living and studying in close proximity.

U.S. Department of Justice statistics indicate between 20-25% of women will experience a completed or attempted rape during their college career; however more than half of raped college women tell no one of their victimization. Victims of sexual assault may experience symptoms of depression, self-guilt, and anxiety or contemplate suicide for years after their assault.

WTAMU provides services to sexual assault victims whether the assault is reported to the police or not. The victims received services offered at WTAMU and from the community. WTAMU staff is trained to recognize an outcry and assist the victim. WTAMU wants to provide services to the victim now rather than the victim continue to experience symptoms for years to come.
